Instead of writing a single, whole review for every new release horror film I watch throughout the year, which comes out to be around 50 to 60 new release reviews, I'm going to publish a quarterly report that brings you the highs and lows of horror film in that three-month span. This way, I can focus my writing efforts on my themed marathons and working on my book, which is my true writing passion. So, I'm coming in a little late on the first quarter of this year, but that's okay. Here are my takes on the new release horror films I caught from January to April. I watched 13 new releases. See below for my quick, 1 through 5 rating on each:

  1. Rust Creek- 4

  2. Velvet Buzzsaw - 2.5

  3. Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror- 4

  4. Happy Death Day 2 U- 3.5

  5. The Hole in The Ground- 3

  6. Climax- 4

  7. Lifechanger- 3

  8. Piercing- 3

  9. Level 16- 3.5

  10. Us- 4.5

  11. Pet Sematary- 3

  12. Braid- 2.5

  13. The Wind- 4

Of these 13 films, there are five must sees for horror fans this year. First, I think most everyone knows they need to see Jordan Peele's Us, which is sitting as my highest rated film so far with a 4.5 out of 5, but the other four must-see films might not be as obvious to everyone. I'm pushing hard for everyone to see two films that were incredible and also directed by women, Rust Creek and The Wind. Rust Creek is a lost-in-the-woods-survival-type horror film, and The Wind is a supernatural Western. Ya'll need to catch up with both of these, and you can stream them on Google Play or Amazon right. this. moment. Also, every horror fan should get familiar with the horror documentary that came out recently (and can be streamed on Shudder) Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror. This is a great documentary that touches on some under-explored parts of horror history! Last, for the artsy fartsy folks, I highly recommend checking out Gaspar Noé's latest film Climax. It will be unlike anything you're going to watch this year. It's gruesome and nauseating and electric. I'll be back with the second quarter report in June! Enjoy your scares.
